Tongue cancer is a subtype of head and neck cancer. Cancer in the tongue is usually attributed to smoking and alcohol intake. However, there are treatments available for tongue cancer. If the tongue carcinoma is detected early, the prognosis is good. A tongue cancer usually starts as a tumor in tongue or lesion.

What are the common causes of tongue cancer or any oral cancer? The most evident symptoms of tongue cancer is bump or lump in the tongue, wound in tongue that won’t heal and painful tongue bump.



If the tongue tumor is small, it can be surgically removed. However, cancer in the base of the tongue may require chemotherapy and radiation. Therefore, always make sure to inspect your tongue with tongue ulcers, tongue wounds and lesions. This may save your life.

Why do I have a white coated tongue? It may be due to the food you eat or a fungal infection. In any case, cleaning your tongue first helps you identify other symptoms. A white tongue is usually benign. But if you also have white palate or spots in the mouth, you should check with a doctor.

Oral tongue cancer is preventable like any other oral and head cancers. Catch them early and you will be fine. Tongue cancer treatments are only effective in early stages.
